ideas

We decided to ask a lots of different people of all years of uni to describe uni in a few words. We wanted to create a montage similar to the channel 4 faces adverts.

Research

As we had decided to use a reconstruction to add humour to the piece, we researched into programmes like Crimewatch. I watched the programme at noticed the types of shots they used within the reconstrucions.
- close ups
- loud background noise
- coming in and out of focus
- text at the start

i also looked on the website:http://www.bbc.co.uk/crimewatch/

Initial ideas

Shots needed
- montage of uni buildings
- reconstruction of radio film
- vox pops

vox pops -
As a group we choose a selection of different questions that related to uni and student life. we then each picked one which we asked different people and filmed the outcome. we decided to do this way as we wanted to have lots of different locations. we also thought about the time scale that we had to do everything and felt it was best to shoot these small sections on our own.

Questions -
- What's advice would you give to new students?
- What's your biggest memory of first year at uni?
- What's the hardest thing you have had to do coming to uni on your own?
- What did you do on your first night at uni?
- Is there anything you didn't expect?

The question that i asked was what's your biggest memory of first year at uni?
The setup - i used my front room of my house to get quite a natural set-up. I used my housemates to ask the questions as i felt they would be the most comfortable in answering my questions.
I found that it was quite difficult to some up just one memory of uni. i found that they struggled with things to say and they had to really think or had quite similar answers. To go on from this i am going to expand the questions to allow more answers. i will also look at changing the locations and have more people answering to create a montage.

When we met as a group we all discussed our findings. Jonny who was given the question what did you do on your first night at uni? He found that most answers where very similar and most of them involving being drunk. We then discussed the idea of having lots of different people and locations and them all saying what they did. Speeding it up to make a montage of all different ways of saying what they did.

Research

This is from a facebook group and i felt it was quite relevant.
Just for fun guys, but come on how many of these can u read and go Hell yeah thats true!!
You actually like doing laundry at home where the washing machines work.
Two miles is not too far to walk for a party.
You'd rather clean than study especially if an essay is due.Oh shit how did it get so late!" comes out of your mouth at least once a night.
Parents' cooking becomes something you desire, not avoid.
You schedule your classes around sleep habits and soap operas especially neighbours and Murder She Wrote.
You know the pizza boy by name and don't even need to read the menu.
You go to sleep when it's light and get up when it's dark.
You live for getting mail.
Looking out the window is a form of entertainment.
Prank phone calls become funny again
.You start thinking and sounding like your friends and your accent becomes a hybrid of West Country, Surrey and general Northern.
Highlighters are the coolest things on earth.
Rearranging your room is your favorite pastime.Rubbish cheap £1 shops are so cool.
The weekend lasts from Thursday to Monday.
BEFORE I CAME TO UNIVERSITY, I WISH I HAD KNOWN...That it didn't matter what my first lecture was, I'd still sleep through it.
That I could change so much and barely realize it.
That you can love a lot of people in a lot of different ways.
No matter how 'cool' you were in school, no one here cares.
That if you wear polyester everyone will ask why you are so dressed up.
That every clock on campus shows a different time.
That if you got good a-levels, so what? It doesn't matter here.
That I would go to a party the night before an exam or essay due-date
That you can know everything and fail a test.
That you can know nothing and ace a test.
That I could get used to almost anything found out about my friends.
That most of my education would be obtained outside of lectures.
That friendship is more than getting drunk together but that's still funny......!
That Sunday is a figment of the world's imagination.
That Psychology is really Biology, that Biology is really Chemistry, that Chemistry is really Physics and that Physics is really Maths.
That my parents would become so much smarter in the last few years.
That it's possible to be alone even when you are surrounded by friends.
TOP 10 REASONS THAT UNIVERSITY IS LIKE PRIMARY SCHOOL.
1. You cry for your mummy.
2. You cross the street without looking for cars.
3. Snack time is a necessity.
4. You bundle up for the outdoors without caring what you look like (because everyone else looks as stupid as you do).
5. You stay at home and play games with your friends.
6. You wear your backpack on both shoulders.
7. You wear big mittens.
8. Playing in the snow is a legitimate activity.
9. You take naps.
10. You look forward to cheese toasties.

Initial ideas

Ideas -
  • Reconstructions - one of best one of worse.Quite comical to add humour. Think about the crimewatch type reconstructions. Consider using drama students to act it out so that it is of a high standard.
  • Things that we wish we had been told before coming to uni - list of things. Vox pops of different people in lots of locations. Think about the channel 4 adverts where it all links up and makes sense on the last point.
  • Start the piece with a montage of the univeristy - Buildings, students, halls, night life. Possibility of using photograph sequence?

Each of us asked our friend about their best and worst moments of uni. To meet up on Tuesday and discuss which to use and film.
