Text and image research

More examples of text and image with the use of a bold big print.

The D&G image is something that i have always considered when i first started this project. I like the simplicty of the models and how normal they look for the shot. The akwardness within the image creates an exciting feel. The use of text is strong and it is intresting as to its positioning.

I like the colour scheme used within the Karl Lagerfeld image, it keeps continuity into the shot and makes you think would the image work the same without the text.

Text Research

I have started to think about my final ideas and the use of text. I have researched into lots of different fashion advertisments and concentrated on how text has been incorporated. I really like the bold text on this Paul Smith image. I have learnt it is important to get the font, size and colour of the text perfect otherwise it changes the whole style of the image.

My thoughts on my second shoot and the outcome

I have posted a selection of photographs that i have worked on, from this selection there is about 4 or 5 which i would consider using for my final prints. I really like the ones where the model look quite natural and her facial expressions are quite unique. They remind of me of photographs you would find in clothes magazines and also on advertising billboards in stores, which is what i wanted to achieve.
Although some of the photographs are not of the highest quality, some are slightly out of focus i think it works within the set up of the photograph. I am really pleased with the colour photograph that i have worked on, i think the style it has created is somehting really different. I think i will consider using this shot as it is different to other fashion shots. It has also made me consider using colour shots a bit more and experiementing in a similar way.

This is a contact sheet from my second photoshoot. I chose a few different simple locations. I am pleased with the outcome and have worked on them, turning a few black and white and also experiemented with adding text.

Rock and Republic

The models positioning caught my eye when looking at this image. i like the use of props used and it adds to the style of the photograph.

Research

These images links strongly to my recent photo shoot as the model is positioned closely to a plain background. I like the tones within this shot, the model looks strong and powerful and creates an atmosphere to the photograph.

Plan of action for the next few weeks

  • Research more ideas
  • shoot another location
  • edit an turn black and white
  • research text ideas - think of a brand name??
  • play with adding text to own images
  • shoot another location
  • edit and turn black and white
  • play with text again

I aim to get all of the above completed before the easter break. Over easter my plans are to shoot some more photographs within a studio setting, edit these with text and get the printed up. Therefore when i come back after easter i will have a week to decide on a final presentation -possibly sticking with the book idea and if so will have time to get my images bound.

Helmut Newton

This photograph has made me intrested in night time shots. I like the lighting within this photograph, i feel like it creates a warm tone with quite a sexy atmosphere. The fact that the female model is dressed quite masculine contractdicts this feel yet it still works really well, and makes the model look more feminine.

Daryl Kerrigan

After my first photo shot being reasonably successful, i have dedided to take my next shots at a different kication. I have therefore researched more into other locations and advertisments that strike my eye. i like the work of Daryl Kerrigan which i found in the fashion book. The location fits well with the style of clothing of the model. i also like how the face of the model is hidden slightly slightly by her hair, i think this works within this frame because she is running but other styles may not work. i think i would like to see the model wearing something that isn't quite so plain and monotone, just to add depth to the image.

Brigitte Bardot

The location of this shot caught my eye during my research stages. I also find the useof the props adds to the image. A negative to this image is that because the clothing is black the detail is impossible to see. As i want to advertise clothing a similar lighting would not work well.

Lanvin & Acne fashion shot

I found this shot in Quest fashion magazine. It reminds me of my own work because of the plain background with the model being quite close. I like how the lighting is pulling your focus towards the clothing and away from the face. I have found that this works well for fashion as the model can oftend distract from the shot.

Feedback

I quite like this picture. It conveys a quality beyond this is my friend doing fashion pictures. You mentioned that you liked the out of focus quality of the catalogue picture.I think this was achieved by bringing the model way from the background and using a largeaperture to minimize the depth of field. In most of your shots the model is quite close to the background which makes it harder to achievethat effect. In taking fashion pictures the precise arrangement of arms and legs can be crucial - also posture. In directing your models ask for small changes in the pose to get closer to what you had previsualized. - feedback from recent uploads

Evaluation of thoughts - 11th March

Thinking about all of my ideas and research i have started to think more about my final presentation. I have started to consider creating a small advertisment booklet showing several different ideas. I want to include a few different layout ideas fo example:
  • idea 1 - Hanging the clothes on a washing line or hooking thm onto to something similar and photographing against an outdoor background. (see photographs of location ideas) I have also thought about using this as a double page spread and adding text such as a brand logo and prices of the items of clothing.
  • Idea 2 - Photographing a male model in just jeans with a shirt/top hung next to him grabbing it to put on. Again i would like this image to be on a outdoor background, maybe have another image imposed on with the same model fully dressed or in a different outfit.
  • Idea 3 - Studio shots
  • Idea 4 - Shots of models against a walled background/doorway, some in the dark some in daylight.
  • For all these images i will consider adding the brand logo and also the prices of the clothes on some of the photographs. I hope to make the booklet around 10 to 15 pages long, depending on time scale.

What's next - I am now going to photograph some possible locations and start shooting a set of photographs by the end of the week, possibly saturday because of the models time availablilty. I am also going to research more into magazines that do this and look at different layouts. I also want to look at model and camera positioning. I have to consider what is going to make my photographs different from other fashion shots.

ASOS Magazine

ASOS Magazine –
I decided to look at how clothing websites advertise their clothes in magazines. The photograph used the same technique as Ben Rayner, blurring out the background. I think it works really well and will experiment with this technique when taking my own photographs.
The use of text within these photographs tells the reader the price of the clothing. I may consider doing advertising shots with text and also maybe include something like this within my final images. Almost create a small book myself for my final project.

Alice O'Malley - Quest Magazine

Alice O’Malley –

I found this photograph in the magazine Quest, I like the casual feel to the whole image and also the blurred out background. I would not consider this photograph to be a fashion photograph but I do like the techniques used by both model and photographer.

Adverts one and two

After getting my group feedback I decided to look at advertisements and the use of text. I really like the embossed effect on these two images. I think it works well as you can still see clearly the model and the clothing.
Other feedback that I was given was the backgrounds. I like how in these images there is a two tone effect of grey and white. When thinking about taking my photographs in a studio I decided that I would use a grey background. This is because looking through magazines the on trend colour seems to be grey. However, looking at these two photographs I really like the two tone effect and may experiment with something similar.

Ben Rayner

Ben Rayner –
Ben Rayner is a London based photographer who works closely with a number of different magazines. I found his work in Wonderland magazine.
These three photographs by Ben Rayner are influential images to the work I want to create. The use of the background being obviously outdoors in a woodland area yet being blurred out works really well. When discussing my work with others in the group we discussed the idea of the backgrounds and how they can completely alter the image. I also like how the background links to the style of clothing that the model is wearing, both very casual. As I want to use a similar clothing style these photographs gave me good ideas for what kind of background to use.
I also considered the layout of the photographs I felt that the photograph with a smaller photograph imposed on works well. I felt it was different to other fashion shoots and that it would work well with advertising as you can see more of the clothing range.

Feedback from group tutorial

Katy - seems well thought out, idea of continuity of 1 style through series of shots, use of contrasting background like derelict wall.
- availability of models - advertise at uni?
- many advertising campaigns - lacoste adverts
- try a variety of locations to see if you want interior or exterior

Alice -
  • good practise for professional field
  • mixture of outdoor and indoor for variety
  • what clothes are yougoing to advertise? do you have to create the product or collect exisiting clothes?
  • problems could be making the photos stand out from other fashion shoots
  • solution experiement with backgrounds and angles, maybe simulate environment
  • design a label?

Gareth -

  • the use of advert style
  • as long as models can get together
  • deciding on costume and lighting
  • costume theme in terms of garments
  • location
  • research advert styles

Group as a whole -

  • use of doorways?
  • text - in the style of.... should it be used?
  • series of a few images for final images
  • d+g adverts. lacose aderts.levi's adverts

Evaluation of feedback

The others seemed to like my propasal and liked the idea of creating a brief fo myself. They suggested the use of text for the end images could be in the style of already successful brands available. I had doubts as to whether to include the text in my final photographs, as to whether i should create the advert or ju the photograph. This is something i am going to have to research further as i am still unsure. Possible problems that may arise are availiability of models, this is something i have looked into and have asked reliable friends to help me. Alice asked me how i would make my photographs stand out from other fashion shots. This is something that i will have to consider and heaving research into what shots are successful and what aren't.

Key Elements of my Project

  • fashion photography
  • male and female models
  • black and white digital photography
  • outdoor + studio
  • brand - style
  • casual clothing
  • contrast
  • tone
  • lighting
  • looking in fashion magazines
  • advertisments
  • use of text

Levi's advert

I found this advert in a fashion magazine and it has been really influential to me. I like the use of the three models next to each other on the advert, and i think it looks asthetically pleasing the way they where not orginally photographed in this way. I may consider using this technique for my final images.
I like the colour tones within this photgraph and like that each model is the same tones even though they where taken at different times. I think this is a very effective method but could be quite difficilt to achieve.

Matthew Burditt

http://www.matthewburditt.org/

This photographer is based in Vancouver who works mainly in beauty, portraiture and fashion. I like his use of quite natural looking models and the causal look really appeals to the type of work i wish to create.

I like his use of lighting within his work. As i want to create black and white images the lighting is very important as to get contrast and tones into the image without the use of colour. I want to create a range of whites greys and black tones into my images in quite powerful ways. I like the way he uses the lighting within the photograph of the female model in the white dress. The strip of light on the diagonal with the corners darkened creates a strong and effective image.

His backgrounds are often quite plain which is what i want to use as to not distract the eye away from the model and their clothing.

Modeling positions. I think this is very important to create a strong and effective image. I have used some of these poses as inspiration for when taking my own photographs.
